Jacobus joins Island Surgeons, offering diverse surgical background
Monica Jacobus, MD joined Island Surgeons this week, expanding access to surgical care in the region. Jacobus earned her medical degree from Saint Louis University and completed post-graduate work at Metropolitan Group Hospitals in Chicago, Illinois and Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital-Level I Trauma Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Her general surgical practice includes breast surgery, endocrine surgery, basic and complex laparoscopy, acute care and trauma surgery.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jason Hogge is excited to have Jacobus as a new addition to Island Surgeons.
“Ensuring access to exceptional general surgery means community members don’t need to leave Anacortes to receive expert care, whether for an emergency surgery or for more routine procedures such as colonoscopies. Dr. Jacobus brings a wealth of knowledge and varied experiences with her to Island Health,” he said.
American Board Certified in General Surgery, Jacobus uses her experience to help people and to educate them about their health.
“I believe you can’t really help someone without listening carefully to them,” she said. “I want my patients to be as comfortable as possible with understanding their health and their options before undergoing a surgical procedure.”
A mom of three, all under age six, Jacobus spends most of her free time with her children and loves learning about them and watching them grow. She says her own children have taught her important life lessons about interacting with others.
In addition to all things surgical, Jacobus has a keen interest in nutrition. Educating patients about nutrition, particularly fiber, is very helpful for understanding and treating many of the issues she sees as a general surgeon. She looks forward to sharing her knowledge and interests with her patients and the community as a whole through classes and education on common surgeries.
