Island Health is pleased to welcome Paula Whitmire, MD, to Island Primary Care – Orcas. Whitmire will provide family medicine care to patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors.

Whitmire completed her family medicine residency in Port Angeles through a rural training program in partnership with Swedish Medical Center. She earned her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Population-Based Urban and Rural Community Health track and holds a Bachelor of Arts in medical anthropology and global health from the University of Washington.

“I enjoy walking alongside patients and their families as we navigate complex chronic diseases, evidence-based recommendations and their own goals for their lives,” Whitmire said. “I hope my patients walk away feeling heard, valued and understood.”

Whitmire is drawn to caring for patients at every stage of life, from newborns and young families to older adults managing complex chronic illness. She is especially passionate about LGBTQIA+ care, reproductive and sexual health, mental health and psychiatric care, and supporting patients living with substance use disorder.

Island Health Chief Executive Officer Elise Cutter said Whitmire’s approach to care makes her a strong fit for the Orcas Island community.

Originally from southeast King County, Whitmire is moving to Orcas Island with her two cats. She’s an enthusiastic daughter, sister, friend and aunt, and she enjoys knitting, quilting, sewing and embroidery, along with getting outside year-round to walk, paddle or bike. She’s also picking up piano, a hobby she says keeps her humble.
