Why do you like working at Island Health?
I like working at Island Health because of the people. I am surrounded by supportive, team-oriented people who strive to give the best patient care. As a new grad nurse, I feel so lucky to work with the people in my unit who look out for me and push me to learn and grow every day. We take great care of our patients while having fun together. It makes a positive and fun environment to work in.
What do you love about your field of work?
I feel honored to play a role in my patients’ most memorable moments. I find deep fulfillment in supporting mothers through labor, ensuring their safety and comfort and helping welcome life into the world. Each birth is unique, and it’s incredibly rewarding to get to advocate for my patients wishes and best interest while giving compassionate care and encouragement along the way. I truly believe I have the best job in the world.
What would you say to someone considering a job at Island Health?
The employees at Island Health work together and bond like a family. Because we are a small hospital everyone knows everyone in every department and we all work together to support each other in the job that needs to get done. No matter where you go in the hospital you are going to see a familiar face.
How would you describe the teamwork and collaboration among colleagues here?
There is a strong sense of mutual respect among colleagues at Island Health. We all understand that we need each other and must work together to give outstanding patient care. My colleagues in the Labor and Delivery unit are always willing to lend a hand, share knowledge and support each other both professionally and personally. Island Health works as a cohesive team and we communicate openly and work together to ensure the best outcomes for our patients.
How has Island Health supported your professional growth and development?
I started at Island Health almost four years ago as a patient care technician in Labor and Delivery. I was pursuing my goal of getting into nursing school and excited to start gaining experience in my dream unit. Once I got accepted into the nursing program, my manager was a huge support and always made sure I could successfully go to school while also fulfilling my duties here at Island Health. Without her support and encouragement throughout that process I don’t know if I could have made it through. I finished the program and stepped into my role as a Labor and Delivery nurse alongside the best coworkers in the world. Currently I am in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and will graduate in May. Island Health has always encouraged professional growth and development and I will continue to strive for more.
