Each year, Island Hospital (IH) recognizes a leader who embodies the values of the Promise – Service Excellence, Teamwork and Compassion – in their work as a team member of Island Hospital and in their work as a leader within our organization.

The individual selected for this honor is recommended by their peers, and the individual we are recognizing today, received resounding support from our Island Hospital leadership team for her ongoing contribution to the exceptional patient care delivered every day to our community.

The recipient of the Management Leadership Award for 2019 is Tammy Akard RT in Respiratory Therapy.

Tammy joined Island Hospital in October 2007 as a Staff Therapist and in her tenure at IH has worked in a variety of roles to support the Respiratory Therapy team including becoming the Respiratory Care Manager in August 2017.

Tammy is tireless in her service to our patients and community, treating our patients with respect and compassion in every encounter, ensuring our patients feel safe and cared for in their most vulnerable moments. Tammy is passionate about the field of Respiratory Care, and uses this vast knowledge to teach the youth in our community about the dangers of vaping to assure their respiratory health in the future.

As a leader, Tammy inspires and supports her staff in providing the best possible care to our patients, and nurtures their growth and professional interests by continuing to expand their contribution within our organization. Tammy is a caring and compassionate leader, always available to offer a listening ear and support in navigating any challenges faced by her team.

As a leadership colleague, Tammy’s ever present warmth and enthusiasm for the work we do at Island Hospital is contagious for all who have the privilege to work beside her.

Tammy, you are an inspiration to all of us and your leadership continues to elevate the quality of care provided at Island Hospital.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!
