Paul Maughan has served on the Board of Commissioners since March 1997 and has led important initiatives for the welfare of our community. In addition to his local service, Maughan is nationally and internationally recognized as a prominent figure within the academic community.
Dr. Maughan holds a Doctorate in Physical Oceanography, as well as degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Meteorology, and is an internationally-recognized expert in satellite imaging systems. After 35 years, Maughan retired from his consulting company where he was intimately involved in the application of advanced technology such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and was an early contributor to what is now Google Maps. He has served as a contractor, advisor and contributor to several groups including the National Academies’ National Research Council.
Within the local community, Maughan leads a full and spirited life where he has spearheaded significant projects such as the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Project, which was enthusiastically received in Anacortes and neighboring communities. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Snowater Resort and enjoys traveling worldwide to visit family.
