Why did you choose Island Health?
I value working at Island Health because of its exceptional culture and the meaningful opportunities it provides to make a positive impact in our community. Joining this outstanding team has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my career, and it has profoundly enhanced both my professional and personal life.
What do you love about your field of work?
I love that my field of work allows us to positively impact so many people at once. Even though we don’t always work directly with patients, we still get to hear their amazing feedback and see how the work we do truly makes a difference in their experience.
What would you say to someone considering a job at IH?
I would tell them that what may begin as just a job can quickly grow into a lifelong career. At Island Health, you’re surrounded by exceptionally welcoming and supportive people and the strength of the teamwork creates an environment where you feel valued, inspired and proud to belong. It’s the kind of place that makes you realize you wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.
How would you describe the teamwork and collaboration among colleagues here?
I would describe the teamwork and collaboration here as unique, strong, communicative, encouraging and supportive. Everyone genuinely looks out for one another, making it easy to build a true work family. Many of these friendships even extend beyond Island Health, creating lasting connections both inside and outside of work.
Can you share an example of how IH has supported your professional growth and development?
When I started at Island Health, I believed I would remain an engineer for the rest of my career. Shortly after joining, I had the privilege of being mentored by several leaders who challenged and supported me. Through their guidance, I gained the confidence to reimagine what my career could become. They helped open my eyes to opportunities I had never considered. I have returned to school with the goal of becoming a Director of Facilities, and I see that as just the beginning.
What kind of recognition or appreciation do employees receive for their contributions?
One of my favorite ways to see Island Health’s values in action is through the CARES Champion Program (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, Stewardship). I’ve witnessed recognition happen in so many ways, during huddles, in passing and on the intranet. Each moment makes a real difference. Seeing colleagues acknowledged for their efforts not only celebrates their hard work but also inspires everyone around them. Recognition here isn’t just a nice gesture, it’s part of what makes Island Health such an incredible place to be.
How does IH create a sense of belonging among staff?
Island Health creates a real sense of belonging through the many events and activities throughout the year, which bring us together and make everyone feel included.
