Compassionate Care in Mammography
What do you enjoy most about being a mammography technologist?
What I enjoy most about being a mammography technologist is the patient care. I really enjoy spending a few minutes with each patient and creating a safe, welcoming and comfortable environment for them. Even though I may be taking the same series of images throughout the day, every patient is different. I enjoy getting to know them, chatting with them, and hopefully, helping them feel a little more at ease.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that I can make a difference in someone’s experience. Mammograms can be uncomfortable for some women, so being able to help them feel heard, respected and at ease is incredibly meaningful. My goal is to make the experience as quick, efficient and comfortable as possible. I love when patients say, “We’re done already?” It’s rewarding knowing that my short time with each patient can potentially make a life-changing difference.
Why did you become a mammography technologist?
Mammography stood out to me because it combines advanced imaging with a very personal side of patient care. I really value the opportunity to educate patients, ease their concerns, and be an important step in their healthcare journey.
Why do you like working at Island Health?
I like working at Island Health because of the community. There’s a strong connection with the hospital, its patients and the people who live here. It’s meaningful to know that the care we provide directly impacts our neighbors, families and friends. I have also been amazed at how much the community supports our mammography department.
What do you want women to know about mammograms?
I want women to know that mammograms are an important tool for detecting breast cancer early, often before there are any signs or symptoms. I also want them to know that it’s completely okay to feel nervous or have questions. Our goal is to not only get the best images possible, but also make patients feel comfortable and informed throughout the process.
