Why did you choose Island Health?
I chose to work at Island Health because Island Health’s patient-care core values coincided with my own. I can say without doubt that in my last 9 years of service, Island’s commitment to excellence has been above and beyond my own expectations. We really do make a difference in people’s lives here by enhancing their quality of life. Our commitment to servicing the Anacortes and surrounding communities’ medical needs has shined through and through, and I am very proud to be part of the Island Health team.
Why did you choose your field of work?
I have a very empathic heart, and practicing as a Respiratory Therapist allows me to use my compassion and skills for the betterment of the people of our community.
What distinguishes Island Health from other workplaces you’ve experienced?
My patients tell me how they appreciate not only the professionalism of the staff, but also our knowledge and kindness. I would say that is the most distinguishable difference—our patients feel like a person rather than just a number. This I believe is what sets Island Health apart and keeps patients coming back when they need help.

Respiratory Therapists—Improving quality of life, one breath at a time.
What would you say to someone considering a job at Island Health?
I would tell them that if they are ambitious, and desire to work for an employer that is committed to providing high-quality healthcare, then they should seriously consider applying at Island Health.
How does Island Health foster a supportive and positive work environment?
In my department, the manager presents herself with a positive attitude, and encourages the same from our whole team. Even when criticism is necessary, it is done in a positive way to encourage growth rather than discourage it. This makes a big difference not only in the individual, but the department as well, with the ultimate outcome being improved employee satisfaction, which leads to a diligent workforce.
