Amazing Team Collaboration

Why did you choose Island Health?
I had my first baby here and truly loved my experience. When I graduated nursing school, Island Health was the only place I wanted to work. The culture here is unlike anything I have experienced at other facilities. I genuinely feel my coworkers in the Birth Center are a second family, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything!

What do you love about your field of work?
I love being a labor and delivery nurse because I witness new life and empower families to create their parenting journeys. I continuously learn new things and love the unpredictability of what I do. Working in such a small community is unique. We get to know our patients well and build relationships that carry forward, often seeing them again for subsequent deliveries. It’s incredibly special!

If you could sum up your job in one sentence, what would it be?
The true work of a labor and delivery nurse is in holding families through some of the most joyous and sometimes the most difficult times in their lives.

How would you describe the teamwork and collaboration among colleagues here?
Our patients will often comment on how well our team works together. This is true of the nurses in our unit and the multidisciplinary care team that serves our community. The way the various departments support each other is incredible. I believe that there is a culture of respect and teamwork at Island that is hard to put words to but is felt by our patients.

What do you like about living in the Pacific Northwest?
I love living in the Pacific Northwest because of the breathtaking beauty. The ability to go from the ocean to the mountains in an hour or two is a gift. The winters may be brutally gray, but once spring arrives, I am reminded why I chose to make this incredible place my home.
