Food of the Month – Citrus
As the days get cold and dark, find ways to brighten it up! It has been shown that eating an orange a day may lower one’s risk of depression.
When purchasing:
- Heavier fruit indicates high juice content.
- Avoid any fruit that are dull, blemishes or wrinkled.
- They should feel firm but not hard
Nutrition:
- Vitamin C: Boost immune system and nutrient absorption which reduces anemia.
- Antioxidants: help with collagen production.
- Flavonoids: reduce inflammation, reduce chronic diseases and support heart health.
- Flavonoids are a chemical with antioxidant properties. They are responsible for the vibrant colors in plants
- Fiber: promotes digestion.
- Potassium and antioxidants: support heart health and control blood pressure.
- High levels of water in citrus promote hydration.
To Keep Citrus Fresh:
- Plan to use within a few days.
- Store at room temperature.
- Place in a cool place away from sunlight.
- Place in a well-ventilated container.
- Do not pile on top of each other as this can accelerate spoilage.
