Island Health is pleased to welcome Jonathan Seavey, MD, a fellowship-trained spine surgeon, to Island Orthopedics. Seavey is no stranger to the region: from 2018 to 2021, he served as a staff orthopedic surgeon at Naval Health Clinic Oak Harbor, where he also served as the Director of Clinical Support and the Interim Director of Surgical Services.

Seavey is a graduate of Harvard University. He earned a master’s degree in biochemistry from George Washington University and his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. Seavey completed his residency in orthopedic surgery through the National Capital Consortium at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He went on to complete a fellowship in orthopedic spine surgery at Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington in Seattle. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Most recently, Seavey served as a staff orthopedic spine surgeon, Vice Chairman of the Orthopedics Department and Associate Director of Surgical Services at Naval Medical Center San Diego, where he also taught orthopedic residents and medical students as an Assistant Professor of Surgery. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 25 years of service.

Island Health Chief Executive Officer Elise Cutter said Seavey’s advanced surgical training and years of military healthcare leadership make him a valuable addition to the orthopedics team.

“Dr. Seavey’s fellowship training in complex spine care, combined with his years of surgical leadership in the Navy, brings tremendous depth of experience to Island Orthopedics,” said CEO Elise Cutter. “We’re honored to welcome him and his family back to our community.”

For Seavey, good care starts with treating every patient like family.

“I try to treat patients the way I’d want my own family treated,” Seavey said. “That means exploring non-surgical options first, making sure patients understand what surgery can and can’t do, and, when surgery is the right path, discussing surgical options to determine the proper treatment plan.  Overall, I favor performing the least invasive option that is compatible with their goals.”

Seavey’s clinical interests include degenerative conditions of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, cervical and lumbar disc replacement, and minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery.

Seavey and his wife are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary this year. They have a teen-age son, along with two dogs, including a sheepadoodle puppy. As a Navy family, they moved frequently over the past two decades and look forward to making Anacortes their home once again. Seavey enjoys hiking, exploring nature and camping with his son in his free time.
