Island Health determines its standard charges (pricing) for patient services with the use of a chargemaster system, which is a list of charges for the components of patient care that go into every patient’s bill. These are the baseline rates for services provided at Island Hospital. Island Hospital does not offer a discounted cash price.

Standard charges shown in the attached files do not necessarily reflect what a patient may pay. Government insurance plans such as Medicare and Medicaid do not pay the chargemaster rates, but rather have their own set rates which hospitals are obligated to accept. Commercial insurance payments are based on contract negotiations with managed care payers and may or may not reflect the standard charges.

Not every service received at Island Health is billed by Island Health. Some of the providers that provide care here are not employed by the hospital and their billing is done apart from ours. These include (but are not limited to) emergency room providers, radiologists, pathologists, anesthesiologists and surgeons. Charges for physicians that we do not bill for are not included in our chargemaster.

HOW TO DETERMINE WHAT YOUR RESPONSIBILITY WILL BE

The organization’s charges are the same for all patients, but a patient’s responsibility may vary, depending on payment plans negotiated with individual health insurers. The amount that you will be responsible for is determined by your particular insurance plan (deductible, co-pay, co-insurance, etc.) and the contracts that they process by.
