Accessing After-hours Care
If you are have a life-threatening event, such as a heart attack or stroke, please call 911.
- If your urgent health event occurs after the clinic is closed and it is not life-threatening, please call 360.376.2561.
- You will be asked to provide relevant information and the on-call Island Health physician will return the call within 30 minutes to discuss the situation and provide advice.
COVID-19 Testing & Vaccines
Island Primary Care – Orcas encourages everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated for COVID. For vaccination information, please visit the San Juan County website at: https://www.sanjuanco.com/1668/2019-Novel-Coronavirus
Free rapid COVID test kits can be picked up from outside the clinic front door. Please take one per family member.
Patients who test positive for COVID should isolate at home for five days to avoid spreading to others. Patients who test positive for COVID and need to see a provider for care, should call the clinic at 360.376.2561and let staff know so they can prepare appropriately for their visit.
Clinic-issued masks are required if a patient exhibits any of the following symptoms:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Congestion or running nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
Masks are also available to anyone who choose to wear one during their visit.
Courtesy Labs at Island Primary Care – Orcas
Island Primary Care – Orcas is happy to facilitate lab orders for an outside provider; but please note that we are not a walk-in lab. There are several things to keep in mind when requesting lab work from providers outside of Island Health.
- Please plan ahead for courtesy labs from your specialists by allowing one to two weeks for scheduling and processing.
- A current order must be brought in or faxed to our office at 360.466.6139 for phlebotomist review before an appointment can be scheduled and at least one week before the results are needed. There are some uncommon orders we may not be able to fulfill due to supply availability or special processing.
- All lab appointments are scheduled from 9 a.m.–2:30 p.m. The specimens are transported to the Island Health laboratory either by plane or by ferry each afternoon.
- For courtesy labs, we function as a “draw facility” only; however, the results will appear in your Island Health patient portal.
- The provider ordering your labs is responsible for communicating your results to you. Please contact your physician’s office directly if you have a question on your lab results.
- Lab result times vary, each test requires different amounts of time to process. At a minimum, most results will take 12 to 24 hours to process although there are some exceptions. For example, a COVID tests takes a few hours to process and upload once received by the Island Health lab, but a urine culture will need several days to show bacteria growth, appearing in the patient portal several days after the COVID results.
Thank you for your understanding when requesting lab work from outside providers.
How To Guide: After-Hours Care
If you’re experiencing a life-threatening event, such as heart attack or stroke, call 9-1-1.
Orcas Island residents have access to after-hours care seven days a week for urgent, non-life-threatening
health matters.
Whether you need care during or after clinic hours, please call, or text 360.376.2561. Texts to this number are replied to during business hours only (M–F, 8–4:30).
After-hours process:
- Call 360.376.2561 and listen carefully to the prompts.
- When calling after-hours, you will be asked to provide relevant information on your medical situation.
- The on-call provider will return your call within 30 minutes to provide advice on your symptoms.
- If determined to be medically necessary, the on-call provider will arrange to meet you to address
urgent medical issues at the clinic. - This may result in an after-hours clinic visit or help in facilitating an appointment in the clinic the following day.
Island Primary Care – Orcas is not a walk-in clinic; same-day appointments may be available

sobre su situación médica. - El médico de guardia le devolverá la llamada dentro de los 30 minutos siguientes para asesorarlo
sobre sus síntomas. - Esto puede dar lugar a una visita a la clínica fuera de horario o ayudar a facilitar una cita en la clínicaal día siguiente.
Island Primary Care – Orcas no es una clínica que atienda sin cita previa. Podría haber disponibles citas para el mismo día. Se requiere una cita para todos los servicios durante el horario laboral o después de este.
