Information related to booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine is changing rapidly. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) released a statement September 24, 2021 recommending a booster shot for the Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer) for the elderly, those in long-term care facilities, people with underlying medical conditions, and for adults with high risk of disease from occupational and institutional exposures to COVID-19.  Below are the CDC recommendations as of September 24, 2021.

Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine CDC recommendations:

• people 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer at least six (6) months after their Pfizer primary series,
• people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer at least six (6) months after their Pfizer primary series,
• people aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer at least six (6) months after their Pfizer primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks, and
• people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of Pfizer at least six (6) months after their Pfizer primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.

Moderna and J&J COVID-19 booster information:

The ACIP will be making recommendations for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines when data becomes available. Given both are still under an Emergency Use Authorization, it may require several weeks before a booster recommendation for the general public is announced from the ACIP.

Individuals who are immunocompromised and 18 years of age or older are currently eligible for a third Moderna dose.
